Politics in Finland

Politics in Finland is based on parliamentary democracy, representative elections, political parties, and government under law. Parliament, the Government, the President, municipalities, and wellbeing services counties have different responsibilities. Citizens can influence decisions through elections, public initiatives, parties, associations, and direct contact with decision-makers.

State

The state in Finland is a democratic republic governed by the Constitution and the rule of law. Parliament makes laws, the Government runs national administration, courts exercise judicial power, and the President performs defined constitutional duties. Municipalities and wellbeing services counties are important public bodies, but they are not simply local offices of the central state.

Elections

Elections in Finland allow eligible voters to choose representatives at national, local, regional, and European levels. The main forms are parliamentary, presidential, municipal, county, and European Parliament elections. Voting is secret, and voters may normally vote in advance or on election day.
