Labor market in Malawi

Malawi's labor market connects people who offer work with companies, institutions and households that need workers. It is mainly informal: 91.5% of employment is informal, while agriculture remains the largest source of work. The 2024 Labour Force Survey reports 50% labor-force participation, 38.8% employment relative to the working-age population and 19.7% unemployment. Access to stable work, training and job matching differs strongly by rural or urban location, education, age and gender.
