Immigration law in Nigeria

Immigration law in Nigeria controls the movement and status of non-Nigerian citizens. It concerns entry, visas, residence, employment, study, business activity, family stays, removal, and departure. The Nigeria Immigration Service is the main federal authority for immigration administration. Immigration officers check travel documents, entry permission, residence status, and compliance with the conditions attached to a person’s stay. A visa or entry permission allows a person to seek entry for a stated purpose. It does not always give permission to work, live permanently, or carry out every kind of business activity. Common immigration purposes include tourism, visiting family, study, employment, business, investment, official travel, and temporary assignments. Each purpose may require a different application, sponsor, approval, or residence document. Foreign workers often need employer support and permission connected with the job. A company may also need to meet its own obligations before a foreign national can lawfully work for it. Residence documents show that a foreign national may remain in Nigeria under stated conditions. Some documents may also support employment, banking, identification, or access to services, but they should not be treated as universal permission for every activity. Citizens of some West African countries may benefit from ECOWAS movement arrangements. These arrangements do not remove every immigration, work, registration, or security requirement. Immigration compliance includes respecting the permitted stay, keeping documents valid, reporting required changes, and leaving or extending status correctly. Overstaying or working outside the allowed purpose can create serious problems. Immigration rules can involve federal immigration law, security checks, employment rules, company obligations, and sector-specific approvals. The practical result may therefore depend on the person’s nationality, sponsor, job, family situation, and intended length of stay.
