Every community in Israel has its own shopping pattern. Large supermarkets support planned weekly purchases, while small neighborhood shops provide quick access and often stay useful when travel is inconvenient. An open market is commonly called a shuk. Markets often sell fruit, vegetables, bread, spices, household goods, and prepared food, with selection changing by place and season. A small local grocery shop is often called a makolet. It may cost more than a larger store, but proximity and personal service can make it valuable. Many food shops follow kosher rules, called kashrut. Products may carry kosher certification, and stores may separate meat and dairy or avoid certain foods entirely. Prices can differ considerably between chains, branches, markets, and neighborhood shops. Comparing the final unit price is more useful than relying only on a sale sign. Friday can be busy because many households shop before Shabbat. Numerous businesses close before Friday evening and reopen after Saturday evening or on Sunday. Reusable bags, delivery applications, self-checkout, and card payments are common. Cash remains useful in some markets and small businesses. Receipts help with returns, warranties, and price disputes. Return conditions depend on the product and seller, so ask before buying expensive or difficult-to-return items.
