Elections in Portugal

Portugal is a representative democracy. Elections are based on broad adult participation by eligible voters, secret voting, competing candidates or lists, and rules for counting and challenging results. The main elections are legislative elections for the Assembleia da República, presidential elections for the Presidente da República, local elections known as eleições autárquicas, and elections to the European Parliament. In legislative elections, voters normally choose a party or list in an electoral district rather than a single individual. Seats are distributed proportionally, and the elected Assembly supports the formation and oversight of the national Government. In presidential elections, voters choose a candidate for the whole country. Before voting, voters should confirm their registration and polling location through an official Portuguese electoral service or local authority. At the polling station, the usual process is to identify oneself, receive the relevant ballot, mark it privately, fold it as instructed, and place it in the ballot box. After polls close, votes are counted and results are formally validated. Parties, candidates, and voters may have specific legal routes to report irregularities or challenge parts of the process. Elections affect public leadership, laws, local services, and Portugal's representation in Europe.
