Taiwan has long been home to Austronesian Indigenous peoples with distinct languages, territories, customs, and political traditions. Their communities remain an essential part of Taiwan’s society and history. From the early modern period, settlers from the Chinese mainland, especially from Fujian and Guangdong, arrived in different waves. They brought languages, farming methods, religious practices, family networks, and local forms of organization. European powers established limited footholds and trading settlements in the seventeenth century. Their presence connected Taiwan to wider regional trade and left traces in historical records and place names. The Qing Empire governed Taiwan for part of the nineteenth century. Administration expanded unevenly, while local communities, Indigenous groups, settlers, and officials negotiated control over land and resources. Japan ruled Taiwan from 1895 to 1945. This period brought centralized administration, infrastructure, public health programs, schooling, and economic development, together with colonial control and unequal political rights. After the Second World War, the Republic of China took control of Taiwan. Political tensions led to the February 28 Incident and a long period of authoritarian rule known as the White Terror and martial law era. Taiwan gradually opened politically during the late twentieth century. Martial law ended, opposition parties became legal, elections became more competitive, and democratic institutions developed. Today, people in Taiwan may describe identity through Indigenous heritage, Taiwanese local roots, Chinese cultural connections, democratic citizenship, migration history, or several of these at once. These views can coexist but can also create strong disagreements. History is visible in museums, memorials, historic buildings, family stories, school lessons, languages, religious sites, and political arguments. A careful approach recognizes that official accounts and personal memories may emphasize different experiences.
