Immigration law in Taiwan

Taiwan's immigration system separates entry permission from permission to live in Taiwan. A person may enter with a visa or another entry arrangement, but a longer stay usually requires the correct residence status. The Alien Resident Certificate, known as the ARC, is the main identity and residence document for many foreign residents. Its validity and conditions depend on the person's purpose, such as work, study, family, or investment. The National Immigration Agency handles many residence, extension, departure, and immigration-status matters. Other authorities may handle related areas, such as work permits, education, health insurance, or taxation. A work-based stay normally requires both a suitable immigration status and permission to work. Having a residence document does not automatically mean that every kind of employment is allowed. Students, family members, visitors, and professionals may have different rights and restrictions. Changing the purpose of stay can require a new application or supporting documents. Foreign residents should keep passports, visas, residence documents, employment or school records, address information, and family documents consistent and current. Changes of address, employer, school, or family situation may need to be reported or documented. Permanent residence, often called an APRC, is a different status from ordinary temporary residence. It may provide greater stability, but it has its own eligibility conditions and continuing obligations. Taiwan's rules are document-based and timing-sensitive. Missing an extension, working outside an approved scope, or staying after permission ends can create serious problems, so uncertain cases should be checked with the responsible authority or a qualified adviser.
