Shopping in Bangladesh

A local market (Kacha Bazar) and a neighborhood shop (Mudi Dokan) often cover everyday needs. Supershops, department stores, brand outlets, specialist markets, tailors, hardware stores, and electronics shops offer more formal ways to shop, especially in cities. Depending on the product, personal-care items can be bought from drugstores, pharmacies, cosmetics shops, general stores, and online providers. Clothing is sold in local markets, brand outlets, by tailors, and through social commerce. Technology is available from authorized dealers, electronics markets, and marketplaces. Online and social commerce are growing nationwide, but product ranges, delivery availability, and reliability vary by location and logistics. An online provider should give information in Bangla or understandable English stating the seller’s name, address, mobile number, product features, stock status, unit price, delivery costs, additional fees, and return, refund, and customer-service rules. A Digital Business Identification (DBID), together with a verifiable seller profile, improves traceability but does not replace checking the goods and payment route. The order confirmation, invoice, chat history, payment receipt, and a video of opening the package should be retained. Paying in advance into a private account without verifiable seller details is risky; cash on delivery, an authorized payment portal, or a traceable escrow arrangement usually provides better evidence. Bangladesh’s digital-commerce rules, the Digital Commerce Operation Guidelines 2021, allow at most five days for deliveries within the same city and at most ten days for deliveries between cities when orders have been prepaid. Shorter periods may apply to regularly needed or perishable goods. If delivery fails, the provider should refund the full advance payment through the same payment route within at most ten days. In cases of force majeure, the provider must inform the customer within 48 hours and refund within 72 hours. Providers should offer a complaints channel and respond or provide a solution within at most 72 hours; their own provider policy should also be checked. Payments in Bangladesh use taka, also called BDT, and may be made in cash, by cash on delivery, bank transfer, card at the point of sale, mobile financial services (Mobile Financial Services) such as bKash, Nagad, Rocket, or Upay, Bangla QR, and internet banking. Bangladesh’s central bank (Bangladesh Bank) supervises the payment system. Two-factor authentication is required for online card payments; the domestic card system (TakaPay) has operated since 2024. For a mobile-financial-services account, agents or bank branches generally require adults to provide a photo ID or another accepted identity document. Normally, each person may have at most one account per provider, and these services are intended for domestic payments, not cross-border transfers. Bangladesh’s consumer-rights law, the Consumers’ Right Protection Act 2009, and the Digital Commerce Operation Guidelines 2021 cover, among other things, promised goods or services that are not delivered, counterfeit goods, expired goods or medicines, short weight, adulteration, and misleading or false information. A general 14-day right of withdrawal modeled on EU rules is not established. Returns, exchanges, and refunds therefore depend on the published provider terms and applicable law; an invoice or proof of purchase is particularly important evidence. In a dispute, Bangladesh’s consumer-protection authority, the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP), can be contacted in writing or electronically under the Ministry of Commerce. Under Section 60 of the law, a complaint generally must be filed within 30 days of the relevant event; proof of purchase and other evidence should be attached. The available contacts are dncrp.com, nccc@dncrp.gov.bd, and hotline 16121. For a payment problem, the mobile-financial-services provider, bank, or payment portal should also be contacted. For goods on the mandatory inspection list of Bangladesh’s standards authority, the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI)—the April 2026 328-product list—check the BSTI marking, packaging, quantity, manufacturer or importer, expiry date, and batch number. For imported technology, a local importer, a traceable invoice, and a valid warranty help with later enforcement of claims. Before buying a mobile phone, its International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) can be displayed with *#06# and checked through the national equipment identity register (National Equipment Identity Register, NEIR) portal or by SMS using the 15-digit IMEI code sent to 16002. Prices, delivery fees, value-added tax, and other surcharges depend on the provider and location and should be shown in full before payment. A regulation by Bangladesh’s tax authority, the National Board of Revenue (NBR), concerning value-added tax on online sales was issued in June 2026. Thin polyethylene shopping bags are banned and are monitored by the environmental authority, the Department of Environment; reusable jute or cloth bags are the obvious alternative. The Solid Waste Management Rules 2021, the E-Waste Rules 2021, and the Plastic Waste EPR Guidelines 2026 concern waste and take-back, but there is no verified nationwide take-back network for electronic waste. Repair, reuse, refill systems, and durable local products are therefore often more practical than unsupported environmental claims.
