Nature in Afghanistan

Afghanistan contains eight biogeographic provinces and fifteen ecoregions, including four classified as critical or endangered and eight as vulnerable in the national biodiversity profile. Forest and shrub cover is estimated at about 1.78 million hectares, while other datasets report forest cover near 1.9%; the figures differ because the definitions and observation years are not identical. Rangelands cover about 30.2 million hectares, or 47% of the country, and support roughly 75–80% of livestock feed. They also provide habitat, fuel, medicinal plants and other natural products, while their condition affects erosion, groundwater, rivers and the resilience of farming and pastoral livelihoods. Afghanistan’s natural landscapes include Hindu Kush and Pamir mountains, plains, arid and semi-arid deserts, alpine steppes, rangelands, river valleys, glaciers, forests and woodlands, lakes and wetlands. Rangelands together with barren land cover about 75% of the territory and are extensively grazed. Wetlands are uncommon in the arid climate but have high biodiversity value. Kol-e-Hashmat Khan near Kabul is a seasonal lake of about 1.91 square kilometres. Band-e-Amir consists of six travertine lakes at about 2,900 metres and is a major nature-tourism site. Afghanistan was not found on the current Ramsar list used for this research, so no national Ramsar status is verified. Nearby Hamun Ramsar sites are in Iran and do not automatically include Afghan territory. Protected Planet and the World Database on Protected Areas recorded fifteen protected areas in August 2026, two management-effectiveness evaluations and no OECMs, meaning other effective area-based conservation measures. This global registry does not by itself prove a national gazette or legally confirmed boundary. Afghan environmental sources refer to sites including Band-e-Amir National Park, Wakhan National Park with the Big and Little Pamir Wildlife Reserves, Shah Foladi Natural Landscape, Bamyan Plateau, Kol-e-Hashmat Khan Waterfowl Sanctuary and Teggermansu Wildlife Reserve. Lists differ, and the current status and boundaries of each site require site-specific confirmation. Management plans have been reported for Wakhan, Band-e-Amir, Kol-e-Hashmat Khan and Shah Foladi. A policy target seeks at least 10% protected land by 2030, but that target does not show that the area has already been protected. The National Environmental Protection Agency, known as NEPA, regulates environmental matters and coordinates national policy. Its Natural Heritage Directorate deals with protected areas, biodiversity, wildlife, wetlands and parks. The Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock covers forests, rangelands and related natural resources. Provincial NEPA offices, local committees, community development councils, wildlife protection associations, forest-management associations and rangeland-management associations can also influence management. Wakhi and Kyrgyz communities, Kuchi herders and other local communities use customary grazing, gathering and local ecological knowledge alongside formal and community-based programmes. Access for residents and visitors is not governed by one verified nationwide permit, booking, fee or seasonal system. Nature tourism is especially associated with Band-e-Amir, Bamyan and Wakhan, but roads, security and local permissions vary by site. The Ministry of Information and Culture reported about 2.3 million domestic and international visits to natural and recreational sites during Eid in March 2026; this is an aggregate demand signal, not an audited visitor count for individual sites. Drought, floods, flash floods, erosion, landslides, avalanches, changing snowmelt and glacier flows, and groundwater changes can damage rangelands, forests, wetlands and habitats. Disaster warnings and emergency response are separate services, while their effects on nature belong to this subject. Protected-species information lists 149 taxa reported by NEPA, including 76 mammals, 57 birds, eight plants, four reptiles, two fish, one insect and one amphibian. Priority species include the snow leopard, Marco Polo argali, markhor, urial, ibex, brown bear, Asiatic black bear, Pallas’s cat, saker falcon and migratory waterbirds. The sixth national biodiversity report identified 39 globally threatened species and eight threatened subspecies, but national populations are incomplete or outdated, so no current nationwide population figure follows from these records. Illegal hunting, collection and wildlife trade are reported conservation concerns; current enforcement details and any general hunting prohibition require confirmation under the applicable law and site rules. Environmental education includes provincial outreach, school programmes and community materials, but a nationwide nature curriculum, accredited park-guide pathway and general public research-access system were not verified. Nature management therefore combines national regulation with local practice, and conservation measures such as rotational grazing or restoration can create short-term limits, monitoring work and opportunity costs for users.
