Albanian immigration law deals with foreign nationals who visit, reside, work, study, join family, seek protection, or settle in Albania. Albanian citizens and people with special protected status follow different rules. A passport or other accepted travel document is normally the starting point for lawful entry. Some travelers may need a visa before travel, while others may enter without one for a limited visit depending on their nationality and status. Short visits and residence are different legal situations. A person planning to live in Albania generally needs the residence route, often called a residence permit or leje qëndrimi, that matches the real purpose of the stay. Common residence grounds include employment, self-employment, study, family connection, and other recognized personal circumstances. Each route normally requires evidence such as identity documents, accommodation, financial support, family records, enrollment, or a genuine work arrangement. Permission to reside does not automatically answer every question about employment. A foreign national should confirm that the chosen status also permits the intended work or that the required work authorization is included or obtained. Applications and renewals involve official procedures, supporting documents, and identity checks. Foreign documents may need authentication and translation into Albanian, and inconsistent names or dates can delay a case. Family reunification can provide a route for qualifying relatives, but the relationship and the sponsor’s lawful status must normally be demonstrated. Asylum and international protection are separate systems for people who fear serious harm, rather than ordinary alternatives to work or family migration. Authorities may refuse, cancel, or decline to renew status when legal conditions are not met or information is false. A refusal, removal measure, or other adverse decision should be read carefully because review rights depend on the decision and circumstances.
