Pets in Albania

Dogs and cats are common companion animals in Albania, although their roles and living conditions vary. Some animals live indoors, some guard homes or land, and free-roaming animals can be present in public areas. Owners are responsible for food, clean water, shelter, exercise, hygiene, and medical care. Albania's hot summers can make shade, water, and safe walking times especially important. Veterinary services are easier to find in larger cities than in some rural places. A veterinarian, commonly called a veteriner, can advise on vaccination, parasite control, identification, reproductive care, and illness. Rules for identification, health records, travel, public spaces, and particular animals depend on the situation. Keep veterinary documents organized and confirm requirements before crossing a border or changing accommodation. Housing contracts and building practices may affect pet ownership. Obtain the landlord's permission in writing and discuss noise, common areas, cleaning, balconies, and possible damage before moving in. Free-roaming dogs and cats should be approached carefully. Do not assume an animal is friendly, healthy, vaccinated, or without an owner merely because it is outside. Pet supplies are available through shops, veterinary practices, supermarkets, and online sellers, with more choice in urban areas. Owners of animals needing special food or medicine should plan a reliable supply. Responsible ownership also means controlling the pet around people, livestock, traffic, and other animals. Use appropriate restraint, collect waste, and prevent unwanted breeding or abandonment.
