Employment relationships in Armenia are mainly governed by the Labour Code and the terms of the employment contract. The law sets minimum protections that an employer and employee generally cannot remove by private agreement. An employment contract is called an “ashkhatankayin paymanagir” in Armenian. It normally identifies the parties, job, workplace, pay, starting date, and other important conditions. A written contract helps distinguish employment from independent service work. Employees are entitled to agreed pay and lawful working conditions. Rules also address working time, rest, annual leave, family-related leave, equal treatment, and occupational health and safety. Special protections may apply to young workers, pregnant workers, and other protected groups. Employers may issue internal workplace rules and lawful instructions. Employees must perform their agreed duties, follow safety requirements, and protect confidential or entrusted property. Internal rules cannot take away mandatory legal rights. Employment can end by agreement, resignation, expiry of a fixed term, or dismissal on a legally recognized ground. The required reason, documents, and procedure depend on how the relationship ends. A dismissal may be challenged when there is no valid basis or the required process was ignored. Workplace disagreements commonly concern unpaid wages, duties, discipline, leave, dismissal, or whether a person was really an employee. Useful evidence includes the contract, job description, pay records, messages, orders, attendance records, and witness information. A worker may first raise the issue with the employer in writing. Depending on the problem, a labor oversight body, court, lawyer, trade union, or authorized representative may assist. Courts can examine employment claims and may order appropriate remedies. Informal work creates practical risks in Armenia because pay, duties, and employment dates become harder to prove. Both sides benefit from signing documents, keeping copies, and recording important changes before a dispute begins.
