Safety in Armenia

Safety in Armenia includes everyday personal security, safe travel, emergency planning, and awareness of natural hazards. Conditions can differ between central Yerevan, smaller towns, mountain roads, and remote villages. Most daily situations call for familiar precautions. Keep valuables controlled in crowded places, use well-lit routes after dark, and avoid displaying large amounts of cash. If a situation feels tense, leave early instead of arguing. The Armenian word ոստիկանություն means police. Uniformed police handle public-order and criminal matters, while ambulance and fire services respond to medical emergencies and fires. A hotel, host, employer, or Armenian-speaking contact can help explain a location or problem clearly. Road traffic is one of the most practical safety concerns. Driving styles may feel unfamiliar, pedestrian priority should never be assumed, and rural roads can include poor surfaces, animals, sharp bends, snow, or limited lighting. Seat belts, careful crossing, and slower travel in bad weather reduce risk. Armenia lies in an earthquake-prone region. In a strong earthquake, protect your head, stay away from windows, and take cover under sturdy furniture when possible. After the shaking stops, leave damaged buildings carefully and expect possible aftershocks. Mountain landscapes bring additional hazards. Weather can change quickly, phone coverage may be weak, and distances can be misleading. Carry water, suitable clothing, a charged phone, and a clear return plan when leaving settled areas. Some areas near Armenia's international borders can be sensitive because of military positions, restricted access, or changing local conditions. Do not approach barriers, military facilities, or unfamiliar tracks near a border. Ask reliable local people whether a planned route is normally used by civilians. Buildings and homes may have different heating, gas, electrical, and fire-safety arrangements. Learn how to leave the building, check that heaters have ventilation, and avoid using damaged sockets or improvised equipment. Smoke or a gas smell is a reason to leave and seek help. Good safety planning is simple and layered. Know where you are staying, keep identification and essential contacts accessible, tell someone about longer journeys, and maintain a small emergency supply. These habits help in both minor disruptions and serious emergencies.
