Shopping in Armenia

Armenia has several shopping systems side by side. Small neighborhood shops, supermarkets, open markets, shopping centers, pharmacies, and online sellers each serve different needs. An open market is often called a shuka. Markets are useful for seasonal fruit, vegetables, herbs, cheese, meat, household goods, and direct contact with sellers. Packaged goods usually have a marked price, while some market goods are priced by weight or quantity. Ask for the total before accepting an item if the price is not displayed clearly. The Armenian dram is the normal currency. Payment cards are widely accepted in larger urban stores, but carrying cash is sensible for markets, kiosks, small regional shops, and occasional terminal failures. Armenian labels are common, and imported products may also show Russian, English, or another language. Check the product name, ingredients, quantity, storage instructions, and use-by information before buying. Fruit and vegetables may be weighed by the seller, at a produce counter, or at checkout. Watch the local process before joining a queue, because store routines are not identical. Specialist goods and international brands are easiest to find in Yerevan. Outside the capital, selection may be smaller, so planned purchases and local substitutes are often practical. Returns are easier when you keep the receipt, packaging, labels, and payment record. Food, medicine, personal goods, and discounted products may be treated differently from ordinary unused items. Shopping can also be social. Polite greetings, patient questions, and a few Armenian words often make small-store and market interactions warmer and clearer.
