Unemployment in Armenia

Unemployment in Armenia is known as “gortsazrkut’yun.” It may follow dismissal, resignation, the end of seasonal work, business closure, graduation, or a period outside the labor force. Being out of work is not always the same as having formally recognized job-seeker or unemployed status. Public services may require registration and information about identity, work history, skills, and availability. Employment support is generally aimed at returning people to suitable work. It can include vacancy information, counseling, referrals, training, work-experience measures, or assistance for groups facing particular barriers. Income support should not be assumed merely because a person has lost a job. Eligibility and available programs depend on the person’s circumstances and the form of assistance operating at the time. Job searches in Armenia often combine formal and informal routes. Vacancies may be found through employment services, online listings, company pages, recruitment firms, schools, professional contacts, relatives, and direct approaches to employers. Skills, location, language ability, transport, care duties, health, and salary expectations can affect how quickly suitable work is found. Opportunities are often broader in Yerevan than in smaller communities, while regional and seasonal work follow local economic activity. People leaving employment should collect documents showing the job and its ending. Contracts, payment records, notices, qualifications, and references can support later applications or administrative questions. A period of unemployment can also be used to retrain, update digital skills, improve Armenian or another useful language, test self-employment, or enter a different occupation. These paths require a realistic budget and a clear plan.
