Art in Australia

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts are diverse, living cultural practices connected with particular peoples, Countries, stories, laws, and responsibilities. Styles and permissions differ, so they should not be treated as one uniform tradition or as freely available decoration. Australian visual art includes painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, printmaking, textiles, installation, street art, and digital media. Artists work independently and through galleries, studios, art centres, schools, festivals, and community organisations. Performing arts include music, dance, theatre, circus, comedy, and multidisciplinary performance. Work appears in formal venues as well as pubs, parks, schools, community halls, and outdoor festivals. Literature and storytelling include novels, poetry, drama, essays, children’s books, oral traditions, spoken word, and writing in many languages. Film, television, radio, games, and online media also shape how Australians tell stories about themselves. Australian art often explores Country, environment, urban life, identity, migration, family, inequality, humour, and belonging. No single style or subject represents the whole country. Public funding, private support, ticket sales, commissions, teaching, and direct sales can all sustain artistic work. Careers are often irregular, and artists may combine creative practice with other employment. Audiences participate by visiting exhibitions, attending performances, buying work, reading, volunteering, joining workshops, or creating their own art. Libraries, local councils, schools, and community centres often provide accessible starting points. Respectful participation requires attention to authorship, copyright, cultural authority, and proper attribution. This is especially important when a work contains First Nations cultural material or knowledge belonging to a particular community.
