Religion in Australia

Australia has no single religion shared by everyone. People may be Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Jewish, Sikh, followers of other traditions, connected to First Nations spiritual traditions, spiritual without a formal religion, agnostic, atheist, or undecided. Christian churches have strongly influenced Australian history, education, welfare, public ceremonies, and community life. Christianity itself includes many denominations with different worship styles, beliefs, leadership structures, and customs. Migration has strengthened many religious communities and introduced new places of worship, festivals, schools, food practices, and community organisations. Mosques, temples, synagogues, gurdwaras, churches, and meeting places can serve both religious and social needs. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander spiritual traditions are diverse and connected with Country, kinship, ancestors, law, stories, and ceremony. They are not one religion, and some knowledge or practices may be restricted to authorised people. Religious practice may involve prayer, worship, meditation, sacred texts, dietary choices, clothing, fasting, festivals, charity, or rites marking major life events. The importance and interpretation of these practices differ between individuals. Public institutions are generally expected to serve people of different beliefs fairly. Religious organisations also operate schools, hospitals, charities, aged-care services, and community programs within the broader Australian system. Disagreement can arise when religious conviction, secular expectations, institutional rules, and individual rights meet. Respectful coexistence does not require agreement, but it does require safety, lawful conduct, and recognition of other people’s dignity. Good religious literacy means asking rather than assuming. A person’s name, clothing, family background, or place of birth does not reliably reveal their beliefs or level of observance.
