A business organizes ongoing economic activities and usually offers goods or services. The business operation is the practical organization, while the company name (Firma) in the legal sense is the name under which a business operates. A sole proprietorship is operated by one individual. There are also partnerships and corporations in which ownership, management, financing and personal liability are distributed in different ways. The choice of legal form affects responsibility, decision-making, administrative workload and liability risks. It should therefore fit the activity, the people involved and the expected economic scale. Many self-employed activities in Austria are subject to the Trade, Commerce and Industry Regulation Act (Gewerbeordnung). Depending on the activity, the trade may be free or regulated, while some professional activities follow other rules. Businesses need orderly bookkeeping or records of income, must handle invoices in a traceable way and meet their tax obligations. The required form depends, among other things, on the legal form and type of business. Self-employed people are generally responsible for their own social insurance, reserves and periods with little income. Revenue is not the same as profit because business costs and other obligations must be deducted from it. Anyone who employs staff also takes on the role of an employer. This creates additional duties concerning registration, remuneration, working conditions, safety and personnel organization. Businesses can implement ideas, create jobs and enable personal independence. At the same time, they carry market, cost and liability risks, making a realistic plan and ongoing monitoring important.
