Religion in Austria

Religion gives many people answers to questions about meaning, life, death and responsibility. It can offer community, rituals and comfort, but every person practices it differently. Christianity has had a particularly strong historical influence on Austria. Catholic and Protestant churches, as well as Orthodox and other Christian communities, are part of the religious landscape. Jewish life also has a long history in Austria and was severely harmed by persecution. Jewish communities, culture and commemorative work remain important parts of society. Muslim life in Austria is diverse and includes different histories of origin, traditions and religious orientations. Depending on the community, mosques and associations serve prayer, education and social exchange. Other religions and worldviews are also represented. At the same time, some people describe themselves as non-denominational, non-religious, atheist or agnostic. Freedom of religion protects personal convictions and their practice within the general legal order. No one should be treated less favorably because of their religion or lack of religious affiliation. Religion is visible at home, in places of worship, in communities and partly at school. How strictly rules, clothing, food, prayers or holidays are observed is not determined solely by the label of a religion. Religious festivals can be religious events, family celebrations and cultural customs at the same time. That is why people celebrate the same festival with different meanings and levels of intensity. When convictions meet, respect, clear boundaries and factual conversations can help. Freedom of religion allows diversity, but it does not justify coercion or violating the rights of others.
