Friendship in Azerbaijan

A friend is commonly called a “dost” in Azerbaijani, and friendship is “dostluq.” The term can carry a stronger sense of trust and loyalty than a casual social connection. Friendships often begin through school, university, work, military service, neighborhoods, relatives, hobbies, or mutual acquaintances. Repeated contact and shared experiences help move a relationship beyond simple acquaintance. Spending time together may involve tea, meals, walks, celebrations, home visits, or long conversations. Generosity is appreciated, but friendship is not measured only by who pays or gives the largest gift. Practical support is a common sign of closeness. Friends may help with transport, job information, moving, family events, illness, or difficult personal situations. Trust depends heavily on discretion and reliability. Keeping private matters private, arriving when promised, and being present in hard times can matter more than frequent cheerful messages. Close friends may be introduced to parents, siblings, spouses, or children and become part of a wider social circle. Respectful behavior toward that family can therefore affect the friendship itself. Expectations are not identical for everyone. Some friends communicate daily, while others remain close despite long gaps, and attitudes toward mixed-gender friendship or social activities differ. Friendship offers belonging, local knowledge, emotional care, and shared opportunity. Its limits should remain clear, because loyalty does not require lending unaffordable money, hiding wrongdoing, or tolerating control and disrespect.
