Religion in Azerbaijan

Most people in Azerbaijan come from a Muslim cultural background. Twelver Shia Islam has deep historical roots, while Sunni communities are also part of the country's religious life. A person's Muslim identity does not reveal exactly how that person lives. Some pray and fast regularly, some observe selected customs, and others understand Islam mainly through family, heritage, or moral values. Azerbaijan has a strong secular public tradition shaped partly by the Soviet period and modern state institutions. Religion and government are formally distinct, and everyday public life is not organized exactly like that of a religious state. Mosques, called məscid in Azerbaijani, serve prayer and community purposes. Visitors may encounter separate prayer areas, shoe-removal rules, modest clothing, and quiet behavior, although arrangements differ. Christian history includes ancient regional traditions as well as Orthodox and other churches. Christian buildings and communities reflect several languages, migrations, and historical periods. Jewish communities have a long presence in Azerbaijan, including Mountain Jewish heritage. Synagogues, settlements, family traditions, and distinct languages form part of the country's religious diversity. Life events such as birth, marriage, funerals, and remembrance may include religious elements even in families that are not highly observant. Local custom and family preference often shape practice as much as formal teaching. Religion can be a sensitive personal subject. Respect means allowing people to describe their own beliefs instead of assuming practice from a name, clothing style, region, or family background.
