School in Azerbaijan

School education in Azerbaijan is commonly called ümumi təhsil, meaning general education. It gives children basic knowledge, social skills, and preparation for vocational education, higher education, or working life. The system is organised in stages. Children first receive primary education, then general secondary education, and may continue to full secondary education. Most children attend state schools, often called məktəb in Azerbaijani. Private and specialised schools also exist, but their programmes and admission arrangements may differ. Azerbaijani is the main language of instruction in much of the country. Some schools or sections teach in other languages, while Azerbaijani language learning remains important for participation in public life. Core learning generally includes language and literature, mathematics, sciences, social subjects, physical education, arts, and foreign languages. The exact timetable becomes more specialised as pupils grow older. Teachers assess pupils through classroom work, assignments, and formal assessments. Important transitions or applications can also involve central examinations, so school records and exam preparation both matter. Families usually enrol a child using identity, residence, health, and prior education records as required by the school process. A child arriving from another country may need translated or recognised documents and an assessment of the suitable class level. School quality and available activities can vary between locations and institutions. Families should consider teaching language, travel, learning support, school climate, and the child’s needs instead of judging a school only by reputation.
