Friendship in Bahamas

Friendship in The Bahamas is mainly informal. No national friendship registry, entitlement, standard fee or fixed procedure was identified. A friend automatically receives no maintenance, inheritance, medical representation, residency or entry rights, and there is no general duty to answer messages, meet, lend money or keep information secret. Boundaries, consent, confidentiality, time and financial expectations are agreed between the people involved. New contacts often arise through schools, churches, workplaces, sports, cultural groups, neighbourhoods and online communication. Junkanoo can create recurring contact through shacks, Junior Junkanoo and school or community groups, with participation shaped by families, communities, events and seasons. Volunteer work with The Bahamas Red Cross Society can also provide regular contact; possible areas include youth services, disaster management and first aid or CPR. Participation is voluntary and normally unpaid, while admission rules, introductions, capacity and codes of conduct depend on the organisation. Youth organisations may publish age, location and meeting-time details, but a 2024 registered-youth-organisations snapshot should be checked for current availability. New Providence and Grand Bahama are more extensively documented. On the Family Islands, schools, churches, local administration and community, sports or cultural groups often provide the practical access points, without a single nationwide directory. The National Youth Guard is a structured service pathway rather than a friendship service. Its reported entry conditions include Bahamian citizenship, an age range of 18 to 25, three months of training, a drug test and mental and physical assessments. Applications may require a passport, National Insurance Card, police record issued within six months and, depending on the case, academic, medical or bank documents. Application does not guarantee admission. Training and internships are paid, and the programme includes a service stipend; friendship is a possible side effect, not its formal purpose. The National Youth Policy 2025–2035 identifies health and wellbeing, safety, inclusion and professionalising youth work among its strategy areas. It proposes mentorship, peer-to-peer, cultural-exchange and Family-Island or diaspora connections, as well as digital citizenship and online safeguarding against cyberbullying. These are policy plans and do not prove that every proposed service operates nationwide. Friendship has no uniform contact obligation. People may maintain contact in person, by phone or digitally, while the archipelago can make visits more difficult. Activities may involve transport, mobile data, food, admission, equipment, membership fees or donations, but private friendship has no standard price or duration. Keep passwords and access codes private. Unauthorised access, alteration, disruption or disclosure of private data or access codes may create offences under the Computer Misuse Act. The Data Protection (Privacy of Personal Information) Act requires fair, purpose-bound processing and security measures; an access request is made in writing and has a stated 40-day period. The official index lists the 2003 Act as current, while the Data Protection Act 2025 is shown as not in force, so its status should be checked before relying on it. Conflicts do not have a national friendship-mediation, termination or reconciliation procedure. People may clarify the issue, take distance, mute, block or unfollow a contact, leave a group or end communication. Threats, violence and misuse of personal data should be handled through appropriate local protection or legal channels, not treated as an ordinary disagreement. A Friendly Society is a mutual-relief organisation governed by the Friendly Societies Act; it is not the legal form of a private friendship.
