Employment in Bahrain

Employment is different from casual help or running an independent business. An employee works under an employer's direction, usually within an organised schedule, role, and workplace. The employment contract is the central document. It should identify the parties and describe the position, duties, pay, workplace, working arrangements, and other important conditions in language the employee can understand. Employment may be ongoing or connected to a defined period or task. It may also include an initial probation arrangement, but the written terms and applicable rules determine how that arrangement works. Employers commonly record attendance and pay wages through traceable systems. Employees should review payslips or payment records and report unexplained differences promptly. Bahraini citizens and foreign employees share many workplace needs, but their administrative situations are not identical. A foreign employee normally requires valid employment authorisation and residence status associated with the actual employer. A change of role, workplace, employer, or employment status can affect both the contract and a foreign worker's permission. Verbal approval alone may not complete the necessary legal process. Employment creates duties on both sides. The employee performs work honestly and follows lawful instructions, while the employer provides the agreed work conditions, payment, and required administration. When employment ends, both sides should document the last working day, final payments, returned property, and any immigration-related steps. Records are important if the parties later disagree.
