History in Bahrain

Bahrain's location in the Arabian Gulf made its islands useful for settlement and exchange. Natural freshwater, farming areas, fishing grounds, and sea routes supported early communities. Dilmun was an ancient trading civilization associated closely with Bahrain. Archaeological sites and burial mounds show that the islands connected commercial and cultural worlds in Mesopotamia, Arabia, and beyond. Bahrain later became part of the expanding Islamic world. Arabic and Islam became lasting foundations, while the islands remained linked to wider networks of trade and learning. Regional rulers and outside powers competed for influence over Bahrain. Portuguese control formed one historical phase, followed by other Gulf and Persian political connections. The Al Khalifa family established its rule in the late eighteenth century. Bahrain's political development thereafter remained connected to neighboring powers and its strategic Gulf position. For many generations, pearling, fishing, farming, crafts, and trade supported local life. Pearl diving was dangerous collective work and became a powerful symbol of endurance and maritime heritage. Oil production changed Bahrain's economy and society during the twentieth century. New work, infrastructure, education, public services, and urban growth gradually reduced dependence on older livelihoods. Bahrain became an independent state in the twentieth century and later a kingdom. Its present identity brings together ancient heritage, Arab and Islamic traditions, maritime memory, and modern development.
