Belgian healthcare is built around social health insurance and recognised care providers. Most residents arrange coverage through a health insurance fund, called a ziekenfonds in Dutch or mutualité in French, or through the relevant public alternative. A general practitioner is usually the best first contact for non-emergency problems. The common terms are huisarts in Dutch and médecin généraliste in French. Patients can often choose their doctor and may visit specialists, although coordinated care through a regular general practitioner is useful. Referral needs and reimbursement arrangements can depend on the type of care. Payment methods vary between providers. Sometimes the patient pays and later receives a reimbursement, while other arrangements allow part of the insured amount to be settled directly. Pharmacies, called apotheek in Dutch and pharmacie in French, provide medicines and professional advice. Some medicines require a prescription, and an on-duty system provides access outside normal opening hours. Hospitals provide emergency, specialist, and planned care. Emergency departments are intended for urgent problems, while routine concerns are better handled through a general practitioner or appropriate out-of-hours service. Keep prescriptions, care documents, invoices, insurance details, and an up-to-date medicine list. These records help when changing doctors, requesting reimbursement, or explaining your health history. Language can affect safe care. Ask for clarification, interpretation support, or written instructions when you do not fully understand a diagnosis, medicine, consent form, or follow-up plan.
