Employment in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Employment is commonly called zaposlenje or radni odnos. It creates a formal relationship in which a worker performs agreed duties and the employer pays a salary. The main rules are not completely uniform across Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Republika Srpska, and Brčko District have their own labor frameworks and responsible institutions. A written employment contract is usually called an ugovor o radu. It should clearly identify the parties, job, workplace, working time, pay, starting date, and other important conditions. Employment may be open-ended or limited to an agreed period. Full-time and part-time arrangements exist, while temporary, seasonal, and trial arrangements may also be used when locally permitted. The employer normally registers formal employment and handles required deductions and contributions. These records connect the worker with systems such as health, pension, and unemployment insurance under the applicable local rules. A normal employment relationship includes duties on both sides. The worker performs the job and follows lawful workplace rules, while the employer provides agreed pay, safe conditions, rest, and employment records. Recruitment often includes an application, interview, agreement on conditions, contract signing, registration, and workplace introduction. Public institutions and regulated professions may use additional procedures or require recognized qualifications. Informal work can leave a worker without reliable proof of service, contributions, or agreed rights. Before starting, the worker should know which entity or district rules apply and keep copies of every signed document.
