A UPA is commonly associated with urgent assessment, while a pronto-socorro handles emergencies, but local organization varies. Private clinics and hospitals operate alongside SUS. Some people pay directly or use a plano de saúde, but coverage, networks, authorization, and reimbursement depend on the agreement. Pharmacies are widespread and sell medicines and health products. A pharmacist can offer practical information, but serious symptoms and diagnosis require appropriate clinical care. Some medicines require a prescription or controlled documentation. Keeping the generic substance name and a copy of a valid prescription can help when brands differ. Vaccination, maternal care, infectious disease prevention, mental health, dental care, and chronic disease support can involve different parts of the health network. The correct starting point depends on the need and local service structure. Language can affect safe treatment. Patients should clearly state allergies, medicines, chronic conditions, pregnancy, and recent procedures, preferably in written Portuguese when needed. For severe breathing difficulty, loss of consciousness, major bleeding, or another life-threatening condition, seek emergency help immediately. Do not delay emergency care to solve administrative questions first.
