Disasters in Bulgaria

Disasters in Bulgaria are commonly described as “бедствия” (bedstviya). Emergency planning covers natural events, major accidents, and other situations that threaten many people or essential services. Earthquakes are a known natural hazard in the region. During shaking, protect your head, stay away from glass, and avoid running onto stairs or outside while objects may be falling. Flooding can follow heavy rain, rapid snowmelt, or rising rivers. Never enter moving floodwater on foot or by vehicle, because its depth and force can be difficult to judge. Wildfires are most relevant during hot and dry periods, especially near forests, grassland, and rural settlements. Smoke, changing wind, and blocked roads can make a distant fire dangerous quickly. Heavy snow, ice, strong wind, thunderstorms, heat, and cold can disrupt roads, electricity, water, and communications. Mountain areas may face faster changes and harder rescue access than cities. The general emergency number is 112. Fire and rescue services, police, emergency medical teams, municipalities, and other public bodies may take part according to the type and scale of the event. Warnings may arrive through official alerts, broadcasters, local authorities, sirens, emergency personnel, or instructions at the affected place. The safest action may be evacuation, sheltering indoors, or avoiding a specific area. A household emergency kit should support a short period without normal services. Useful basics include drinking water, simple food, medicines, light, warm clothing, hygiene items, copies of key information, and ways to charge or power essential devices. After a disaster, damaged buildings, unstable slopes, contaminated water, fallen cables, fire, and repeated shocks can remain dangerous. Return to an evacuated area only when the responsible authorities indicate that it is safe.
