The lands of present-day Bulgaria preserve traces of prehistoric communities, Thracian societies, Greek settlements, and Roman and Byzantine rule. Archaeological sites, tombs, roads, towns, and objects reveal these many layers. The Bulgarian state emerged in the Balkans during the early Middle Ages. Bulgars, Slavs, and existing populations gradually formed a political and cultural community whose identity developed over time. The First Bulgarian Empire became an important medieval power. The adoption of Christianity and the growth of Slavic literacy connected religion, government, education, and written culture. After a period of Byzantine rule, the Second Bulgarian Empire restored Bulgarian statehood. Medieval capitals, churches, fortresses, manuscripts, and artistic traditions remain important symbols today. Bulgarian lands later became part of the Ottoman Empire for several centuries. Communities preserved and changed their religious, linguistic, economic, and local institutions within that wider imperial system. The Bulgarian National Revival, known as Vazrazhdane or Възраждане, strengthened education, church organization, publishing, trade, and national consciousness. Revolutionary movements and international events contributed to liberation and renewed Bulgarian statehood in the nineteenth century. Modern Bulgaria experienced unification efforts, wars, political upheaval, territorial change, and difficult relations with neighboring states. These events left diverse memories among families and communities across the region. After the Second World War, Bulgaria became a socialist state dominated by the Communist Party. Industrialization, expanded public systems, political repression, state control, and social change all formed part of this period. The end of communist rule opened a transition toward parliamentary democracy and a market economy. Bulgaria's current institutions and public debates still reflect experiences from every earlier period.
History in Bulgaria
The history of Bulgaria connects ancient Balkan peoples, medieval Bulgarian states, centuries within the Ottoman Empire, national revival, modern statehood, socialism, and democratic change. Bulgaria's past explains much of its language, monuments, holidays, religious heritage, and national memory. Historical experiences are interpreted differently, so broad chronology should be separated from personal and political judgments.
