Immigration law in Bulgaria

Bulgarian immigration law separates entry permission from the right to reside after entry. A visa, where required, allows travel for a stated purpose, while longer residence usually requires a separate legal basis and procedure. Citizens of the European Union, European Economic Area, and Switzerland generally benefit from free-movement rules. For longer stays, they may need to complete the applicable registration process and show a recognized basis such as work, self-employment, study, or sufficient resources. Nationals of other countries usually rely on a specific route. Common bases include employment, business activity, study, family connection, and other grounds recognized by Bulgarian law. Bulgarian terms include виза for visa and разрешение за пребиваване for residence permit. Residence may be organized into categories reflecting its nature and duration, but having one status does not automatically grant every right attached to another. Work authorization and residence permission are connected in many cases but are not identical. Some routes combine relevant approvals, while others require the employer and foreign national to complete separate or coordinated steps. Family-based residence depends on the sponsor, the family relationship, and the sponsor's status. Marriage or parenthood may create a possible route, but authorities can still require proof that the legal conditions are met. Applications commonly require a valid travel document, proof of purpose, accommodation, resources, insurance, and civil-status or criminal-record documents where applicable. Foreign documents may need legalization or another form of authentication and an accepted Bulgarian translation. The Migration Directorate, known as Дирекция Миграция, and its territorial units handle many residence matters. Bulgarian diplomatic and consular missions are important for visa procedures started abroad, while employment authorities may participate in work-related routes. Immigration status is document-based and purpose-specific. Changing employer, studies, family circumstances, address, or travel document can affect the correct procedure, so changes should be checked before action is taken.
