Bulgarian, called български език, is the main language of public life, education, administration, national media, and most everyday communication in Bulgaria. It belongs to the South Slavic group of languages. Modern Bulgarian uses Cyrillic, known as кирилица. Each letter represents a sound or sound pattern, and learning the alphabet makes signs, place names, transport information, and menus much easier to read. Bulgarian has grammatical gender and uses articles attached to the ends of nouns and adjectives. Unlike many other Slavic languages, it has largely lost the broad noun-case system and commonly uses short pronoun forms and verb structures to express relationships. Verbs communicate person, time, completion, and the speaker's view of an event. Bulgarian can also mark that information was reported or not directly witnessed, although learners can begin with simpler everyday forms. Speech changes with social distance. Ти is the informal singular form of “you,” while Вие is used for respectful singular address and for speaking to more than one person. Regional dialects differ in pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. Standard Bulgarian is used in formal education and nationwide communication, but dialects are meaningful parts of local identity. Turkish, Romani, Armenian, and other community languages have historical or present roles in Bulgaria. English and other international languages may help in some settings, but availability should never be assumed. Communication includes tone, context, facial expression, and gesture as well as words. A familiar Bulgarian head movement may be interpreted differently by outsiders, so spoken confirmation is safer when an answer matters.
