Languages in Bulgaria

The Bulgarian language is called „български език“. It is the official language of Bulgaria and is widely used in government, public education, healthcare, work, media, and everyday communication. Bulgarian uses the Cyrillic alphabet. Learning the letters and their common sounds gives beginners access to street signs, forms, timetables, labels, and names. Bulgarian is a South Slavic language. It has grammatical features, sound patterns, and forms of politeness that learners gradually understand through study and repeated use. Standard Bulgarian is used in formal writing and teaching, while regional speech and everyday conversation can sound different. A learner does not need to copy every local expression to communicate clearly. Bulgaria also has speakers of Turkish, Romani, Armenian, and other community languages. These languages can be important for family and cultural identity, but they do not replace Bulgarian in many official situations.
