Nature in Bulgaria

The Bulgarian word for nature is “природа” (priroda). It means the living world and the physical features around it, including plants, animals, rocks, soil, water, and natural processes. Bulgaria has varied landscapes within a relatively compact territory. Major mountain regions, lowlands, river valleys, the Danube area, and the Black Sea coast create different climates and living conditions. Forests are an important part of Bulgarian nature. They provide habitats, help hold soil and water, store carbon, supply useful materials, and offer places for walking, but they can be harmed by fire, careless cutting, pests, and erosion. Rivers, springs, lakes, reservoirs, wetlands, and coastal waters connect habitats and communities. They support wildlife and human needs, yet their water levels and quality can change because of weather, land use, pollution, and water extraction. Wild nature includes common species seen near settlements as well as animals that need large or quiet habitats. A wild animal should be observed from a distance because feeding, chasing, touching, or approaching young animals can harm both the animal and the person. Bulgaria uses several kinds of protected areas. National parks, nature parks, reserves, protected localities, natural monuments, and European conservation zones can overlap, and each designation may have its own purpose and restrictions. People enjoy nature through hiking, swimming, birdwatching, climbing, skiing, fishing, and visits to caves or mineral springs. Some activities require special care, permission, seasonal awareness, or local knowledge, and natural conditions can change quickly. Nature offers recreation, tourism, education, rural livelihoods, and protection from heat, floods, and erosion. However, access is not unlimited, and sensitive habitats, private land, fire risk, severe weather, and wildlife needs can restrict what visitors should do.
