Shopping in Bulgaria

Food and household goods in Bulgaria are sold through large supermarkets, smaller chains, independent neighbourhood shops, markets, and specialist stores. Choice and opening habits differ between major cities and smaller communities. A traditional market is commonly called пазар. Markets may sell fruit, vegetables, cheese, meat, clothing, flowers, and household items, with different vendors responsible for their own stalls. Products normally display a price and a unit of measurement. Reading whether a figure applies to one item, a package, or a kilogram prevents confusion. The Bulgarian lev is used for ordinary payments. Cards are widely accepted in many formal shops, while cash can be important at stalls, small businesses, and in rural areas. Bulgarian food labels use Cyrillic and normally include core product information. The words кг for kilogram and г for gram are especially useful, as are срок for a period or term and цена for price. At produce counters and markets, a worker may weigh goods and attach a label. In other stores, customers weigh produce themselves before going to the checkout. A касова бележка is a fiscal receipt. Keeping it is useful when checking a transaction or trying to return a suitable non-food item. Consumer rights exist, but return options depend on whether goods are faulty, where they were bought, and the seller's conditions. A change-of-mind return from a physical shop should not be assumed.
