Transport in Bulgaria

Urban public transport in Bulgaria is organised locally. Sofia has metro, tram, trolleybus, and bus networks, while other cities use different combinations of buses, trolleybuses, and other services. Ticket systems are not identical across the country. A ticket may depend on time, route, vehicle, zone, or travel product, and validation can be a separate required action. Intercity buses connect many cities and towns and often leave from an автогара, meaning a bus station. Smaller destinations may have limited services, especially outside working days or busy seasons. Passenger rail is mainly associated with БДЖ, the Bulgarian State Railways. Trains can be useful between major centres, but journey time, comfort, connections, and station access vary by route. Taxis are common in cities and tourist areas. Using an identifiable licensed vehicle, checking the displayed tariff information, and requesting a receipt reduces the risk of disputes. Driving provides access to rural and mountain areas, but road quality, lighting, weather, and driving behaviour vary. Drivers must understand local signs, parking rules, insurance duties, and vehicle requirements. A road-use charge called a винетка applies to many vehicles on relevant roads. It is linked to the vehicle and travel context, so drivers should obtain the correct official product before using affected roads. Walking and cycling conditions are uneven. Pavements, crossings, lighting, bike infrastructure, snow, heat, and traffic require extra attention, particularly with children or reduced mobility.
