Professions in Burkina Faso

The professional landscape in Burkina Faso includes production, maintenance, processing, sales, transport, care, teaching, administration, protection and creative work. Agriculture and livestock raising, trade, crafts, mining, construction, transport, healthcare, education and administration are particularly important. Communications, digital work and culture are also becoming more significant. Regional distribution changes the opportunities: many services and administrative positions are concentrated in Ouagadougou and Bobo-Dioulasso, while agriculture and livestock raising dominate outside the major cities. Mining and security zones have their own access and risk conditions. The National Directory of Trades (Répertoire national des métiers), known as the RNM, has classified professions into 15 sectors since 2026 and links them to uniform names and codes. It is based on the 2008 International Standard Classification of Occupations and a country code, and also serves as a basis for curricula. The Interministerial Directory of State Occupations (Répertoire interministériel des métiers de l’Etat, RIME), by contrast, describes activities and functions of the state; a RIME entry does not automatically confirm private recognition of an occupation. Access may be through apprentissage, meaning practical vocational training, learning in a company, practical experience, family work or self-employment. Other routes include vocational and technical education and training (EFTP) and formal qualifications. These include the vocational aptitude certificate (CAP), the vocational studies certificate (BEP), the vocational qualification certificate (CQP), the vocational qualification diploma (BQP), the vocational technician diploma (BPT) and the specialized vocational technician diploma (BPTS). The baccalaureate or a university degree may also provide access depending on the occupation. Certification examinations in 2026 include 14,938 CQP candidates, 3,132 BQP candidates, 864 BPT candidates and 208 BPTS candidates. The scheduled examination periods are June 30 to July 7 for the CQP, July 21 to 28 for the BQP, September 1 to 8 for the BPT and September 15 to 22 for the BPTS; specific dates depend on the relevant notice. For the public service, initial access usually takes place through a direct selection competition (concours). Registration for the online public-service application platform (e-Concours) takes place online and does not require a physical dossier at registration. A professional selection competition is intended for people already employed and generally requires a maximum age of 47 on December 31, at least five years of public-service employment and three of those years in the relevant position. Professional examinations also have age and service requirements derived from the applicable special status. Institutions such as the National School of Administration and Magistracy (École nationale d’administration et de magistrature, ENAM) and the responsible authorities publish the applicable conditions. Regulated professions require additional recognition and registration. Doctors need a state diploma as Doctor of Medicine or a recognized equivalent and registration on the list of the National Council of the Medical Order (Conseil national de l’Ordre des médecins, CNOM). The dossier includes, among other things, a diploma, proof of nationality or residence status, a criminal-record extract issued less than three months earlier and a medical certificate. The responsible regional council decides within a maximum of two months; the decision is communicated within seven days. Registration and ongoing contributions involve fees. Recognition of foreign qualifications and special access rules depend on the profession, nationality, reciprocity and conditions within Burkina Faso, the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA) and the Economic Community of West African States (CEDEAO). Pharmacists are subject to registration and the professional rules of the National Order of Pharmacists of Burkina Faso (Ordre national des pharmaciens du Burkina Faso, ONPBF). Auditors and chartered accountants need the relevant qualification and registration with the professional order for auditors and chartered accountants (ONECCA-BF), as well as compliance with professional rules, disciplinary regulations and continuing professional development. Lawyers are subject to the lawyers’ professional order (Ordre des avocats) or the Bar (Barreau). Since the 2025 law, tax advisers have been subject to the National Order of Tax Advisers of Burkina Faso (Ordre national des conseils fiscaux du Burkina Faso, ONCF-BF). Actual working conditions vary greatly by occupation and degree of formalization. In the first half of 2025, 95.7 percent of employment nationwide was informal; the figure was 99.3 percent in agriculture and 98.3 percent in trade. Around 80 percent of jobs were considered vulnerable, 62.3 percent had no formal written contract, 43.4 percent involved more than 48 hours per week and 97.3 percent offered no medical coverage. These figures describe the employment context and do not automatically apply to every individual occupation. For 35.3 percent, main earnings were below the statutory minimum wage (SMIG) of 45,000 West African CFA francs (FCFA). The 2026 labour law includes rules on equal pay for equal qualifications and work, telework, and safety and health at work. Companies with at least 25 employees must establish an appropriate safety and health committee. In the event of dismissal, awarded damages may reach a maximum of 24 months’ salary. For fixed-term work, the rule on temporary assignment arrangements (mise à disposition) limits the assignment to a maximum of one day. Social protection depends on status. The National Social Security Fund (Caisse nationale de sécurité sociale, CNSS) finances benefits for families, occupational risks and old age. The total contribution is 21.5 percent of the contribution base, of which 16 percent is paid by the company and 5.5 percent by the employee; voluntary insurance uses a rate of 14 percent. The monthly contribution base is capped at 800,000 FCFA. Companies with at least 20 employees report and pay monthly, while smaller companies do so quarterly. For informal or self-employed workers, insurance coverage does not arise automatically; voluntary insurance may be possible. Civil servants, military personnel and judges fall under the autonomous pension fund for public servants (CARFO) for old-age pensions. A professional development path may lead from apprentissage and experience to certification, dependent employment, self-employment, entrepreneurship or specialization. In the private and informal sectors, this progression is not regulated uniformly nationwide. In the public service, advancement takes place through selection competitions, professional examinations, further training and the applicable special status. A qualification therefore guarantees neither employment nor a particular level of pay. Fees for training, examinations, registration and contributions, as well as equipment and transport costs, depend on the occupation, provider, location and status; there is no single national amount or uniform timetable for all occupations. Before starting an occupation, the current notice, responsible authority, recognition of the qualification and regional conditions should therefore be checked.
