Disasters in Burundi

Disasters in Burundi are caused mainly by floods, heavy rainfall, landslides, storms, drought and water shortages; hail, earthquakes and fires are also part of national disaster planning. Bujumbura-Mairie, Gatumba and Mutimbuzi, the shores of Lake Tanganyika and the Rusizi, and densely populated basins and slopes are particularly exposed. Protection relies on warnings, local preparedness, coordinated assistance and, where necessary, hazard-related relocation (délocalisation), meaning an officially supported move out of a danger zone.
