State in Burundi

Burundi is a sovereign, secular, democratic and unitary republic with an indivisible territory. Since the 2025 territorial reform, the state has been divided into five provinces and 42 communes; below them are zones and hills or quarters. The president, government, parliament and courts share responsibility for leadership, legislation, oversight and the administration of justice. State services, public finances, media oversight and security are organized by central and local authorities.
