Friendship in Chad

A friendship in Chad does not require an application, fee, age limit or official proof. Organized activities can create opportunities for contact, but joining a group does not establish a legal friendship status. The relationship remains personal and voluntary, and friendship does not automatically create rights to representation, financial support, care, inheritance, residence or public benefits. Common meeting places include schools, universities, neighborhoods, sports groups, Scouts, religious communities, youth clubs, cultural centres and displacement or refugee spaces. Village de la démocratie projects in Sarh, Bongor, N'Djamena and Mongo provide settings for dialogue, games and exchange. CLAC centres support cultural activities and peer education. Child-friendly spaces provide play, sport, psychosocial support and contact with peers, while U-Report and youth spaces can provide additional channels for participation and communication. CNJT youth structures generally address people aged 18 to 35; child-friendly spaces may serve children up to age 17, depending on the project. Access to organized activities varies by place and project. Gender, age, religion, origin, disability, displacement status, language, transport, security and local social rules can affect participation. UNICEF has documented male dominance in some youth activities and hesitation to participate because of fear of reprisals. Costs for friendship itself have no standard amount, but phone credit, data, transport, meetings, gifts and group contributions can make regular contact difficult. ITU data for 2024 records 12.6% internet use, 44.3% mobile ownership and 17.3 active mobile-broadband subscriptions per 100 people in Chad. At least 3G coverage reached 84.5%, while LTE or WiMAX coverage reached 60%; online contact is therefore possible but uneven. General constitutional protections concerning expression and communication, religion, association, assembly, movement, privacy and confidentiality of communications support social contact. They do not create friendship-specific duties or entitlements. Conflict, displacement, limited resources, local tensions, discrimination, restricted mobility and communication costs can affect friendships and organized peer contact. Groups may support social cohesion and youth dialogue, but they cannot guarantee a safe or lasting friendship. A friendship may end privately through distance, conflict, reduced contact or ghosting, and Chad has no nationwide standard for friendship mediation. If contact involves violence, threats, gender-based violence, exploitation or coercion, the appropriate response is protection and legal or social support rather than friendship mediation. Depending on the situation, this may involve a social worker, CISM, child-protection or gender-based violence services, the Chad Red Cross, UNICEF, UNHCR, an NGO, or local administrative or traditional authorities.
