Study in Chad

The Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Vocational Training (MESRSFP) oversees higher education in Chad. Public institutions include the Université de N’Djamena, Université d’Abéché, Université d’Ati, Université de Sarh, Université de Doba, Université de Moundou, Polytechnique de Mongo, Université de Pala, Université Roi Fayçal and the Université Virtuelle. Universities in Bol, Bongor and Faya were added in 2025, so the institutional landscape remains subject to change. Chad also has grandes écoles, institutes and specialized centres, including six state higher technical institutes: INSTA in Abéché, INSATAL in Laï, INSAMB in Biltine, INSSSI in Iriba, INSPM in Mao and INSEM in Moussoro. Four higher teacher-training schools operate in N’Djamena, Bongor, Abéché and Sarh. Other institutions, such as ENASTIC, ENSTP and ENASS, operate under shared supervision. Doctoral study is organized through the École Doctorale des Sciences, Techniques et Environnement (ED-STE) and the École Doctorale des Lettres, Sciences humaines et sociales (ED-LSHS). The technical institutes report 4,387 students, 230 teachers and 32 laboratories in the available national information. The LMD framework means Licence, Master and Doctorat. A Licence normally follows the baccalauréat or a recognized equivalent, a Master normally requires a Licence or another Bac+3 equivalent, and a Doctorat follows the advanced study and research pathway. Programs include biology and geology, mathematics and computer science, physics and chemistry, law, economics, management, accounting, finance, modern literature, history, geography, sociology, communication, Arabic and linguistics. Other options include agronomy, environmental studies, fisheries resources, food processing, arts and crafts, Sahara and Sahel studies, petroleum, livestock, electrical and energy engineering, surveying and geomatics, cybersecurity management and education sciences. Teacher-training programs count as tertiary study when provided by a higher education institution; they are not the same as general initial vocational training. Admission begins with the baccalauréat or a recognized equivalent. National examinations, post-secondary examinations and some competitive examinations are handled by ONECS, the national body responsible for examinations and diploma services. Each institution sets its application documents, deadlines, selection procedure and enrollment calendar. Sarh’s published 2026–27 process, for example, requests an application, an authenticated baccalauréat or equivalent certificate with grades, a birth certificate, proof of nationality, a criminal-record document and proof of payment. Moundou separates administrative enrollment from academic enrollment and requires students to choose their teaching units and study pathway. The Université Virtuelle reviews applications through an academic committee and applies separate arrangements for working students and returning learners. Its ordinary regime lists an age limit below 24 for Licence applicants and below 28 for Master applicants, with the most recent qualification normally no more than two years old; special arrangements exist for some working or returning students. Sarh’s published rules include an age limit of 24 for the regular regime. Transfer and equivalence procedures depend on the applicable regulations. Students generally complete administrative enrollment each year and academic enrollment for their courses. Teaching may include lectures, tutorials, practical work, continuous assessment and examinations. French and Arabic are used in teaching and administration, making bilingual study support relevant in some programs. National academic calendars and admission routines are not fully uniform, so the institution and faculty remain the decisive sources for current dates, documents and course availability. Eight academic areas support administration across the country: Faya, Abéché, Mongo, Mao, Moundou, Sarh, Bongor and N’Djamena. Public higher education is not generally free. Fees are centrally regulated but vary by institution, study regime and program. Available figures include approximately FCFA 100,000 for a Licence cycle and FCFA 200,000 for a Master cycle in the 2024 UNESCO Global Education Monitoring information. Sarh lists FCFA 50,000 per year for regular Master students and FCFA 200,000 per year for special-regime students in 2026. The Université Virtuelle publishes an example of FCFA 53,000 for regular students and FCFA 500,000 for special-regime students. These amounts do not include living costs, transport, learning materials or possible application and examination charges. The Centre National des Œuvres Universitaires (CNOU) provides student services under the MESRSFP. Its support can include accommodation, meals, transport, health and social assistance, sport and cultural activities, as well as domestic and international scholarships or mobility support. Scholarship files commonly consider Chadian nationality, academic performance, the language of the host country and a complete application. Access to services such as the cafeteria usually requires a student or university-services card. A main meal is listed at FCFA 100, while students with disabilities may receive meals free of charge under the stated arrangement. The Conseil National de l’Enseignement Supérieur Privé (CNESP) regulates admission and accreditation of private institutions and authorizes or accredits programs such as Licence and Master. The private sector already included 65 institutions in the 2018–19 directory, while current regulation and harmonization continue. The national Licence in the private sector was politically agreed for 2026, and national Master harmonization is identified as the next step. CAMES, the regional higher education and quality-assurance body, provides a reference for recognition and standards. ONECS also authenticates diplomas, handles equivalence and translation services, maintains archives and produces diploma statistics. A Licence can lead to a Master or to qualified employment. A Master can lead to a Doctorat, research or skilled work, while a Doctorat mainly supports research and university teaching. Participation remains limited: the tertiary gross enrollment ratio was 4.4% in 2020 and 2.5% for women, with strong regional and gender disparities. These figures describe access at system level and do not determine admission to a particular institution. Applicants should verify the institution’s current authorization, program recognition, entry conditions, fees, enrollment dates and available student services before paying or relocating.
