Language in Chad

Chad has two official languages, French and Arabic, while all other locally used languages are treated as national languages whose development the state is required to promote. Chadian Arabic is widely used as an oral lingua franca, especially in central and northern areas, but it is not a separate constitutional official language. Language use varies strongly by region, with French and formal Arabic dominant in state institutions and local languages central to family life, culture and community participation.
