Nature in Chile

The usual Spanish word for nature is “naturaleza.” In Chile, it includes living species, water, rocks, soils, landscapes, and the relationships that connect them. Chile’s long territory contains many ecosystems. Major examples include northern desert and high-altitude environments, Mediterranean-type central landscapes, southern temperate rainforests, wetlands, rivers, mountains, coasts, islands, fjords, and subantarctic areas. Native species developed under Chile’s geography and climate. Some are endemic, meaning that they naturally occur only in Chile or in a very limited neighboring region, which makes their survival especially important. Protected natural areas conserve ecosystems, landscapes, cultural connections, and places for research or responsible recreation. Chile uses several forms of protection, and rules can differ between national parks, reserves, natural monuments, marine areas, private conservation lands, and other designated sites. A typical nature visit begins with checking access conditions, weather, route difficulty, fire restrictions, and local guidance. Visitors then register when required, remain on marked routes, carry their waste out, and avoid disturbing plants, animals, rocks, or cultural objects. Wildlife should be watched quietly from a distance. Feeding, touching, chasing, or moving animals can change their behavior, spread disease, or place both people and wildlife in danger. Important pressures include land conversion, water stress, wildfire, pollution, illegal extraction, free-roaming pets, and introduced species. Climate change can add stress by shifting rainfall, temperature, snow, glaciers, fires, and the places where species can survive. Nature conservation can support clean water, healthier soils, climate resilience, education, tourism, and local livelihoods. Protection works best when scientific knowledge, community experience, Indigenous relationships with land, responsible access, and long-term care are considered together.
