School in Chile

The Chilean school path begins with educación parvularia, followed by educación básica and educación media. Early childhood education supports development and preparation, while the later stages provide general and specialized learning. Educación básica builds core abilities such as reading, writing, mathematics, science, social understanding, arts, and physical development. Students then continue into educación media, also called enseñanza media. Secondary education can follow a humanistic-scientific route or a technical-professional route. The first usually emphasizes broad academic preparation, while the second combines general education with an occupational specialty. Schools may be publicly administered, state-subsidized private, or privately funded. Everyday names such as escuela, colegio, and liceo do not by themselves explain a school’s administration, funding, or educational approach. Spanish is the main classroom language. Schools may also provide foreign-language teaching, intercultural education, and support connected with Indigenous languages or local communities. The school year includes classes, assessments, reports, and communication with families. Attendance, progress, conduct, and support needs are usually followed through school records and meetings. Children can need additional help because of disability, learning differences, language, health, mobility, or difficult family circumstances. The type and capacity of support differ between schools, so families should ask specific questions. Enrollment procedures and available places can depend on the type of school and admission route. Families should use official instructions, keep documents ready, and contact the school directly when a child has previous studies from another place.
