Crime in China

Crime in China includes ordinary theft and violence as well as fraud, online deception, and commercial scams. Many daily situations feel orderly, but low visible risk does not mean that crime cannot occur. Sensible protection of money, identity, devices, and personal boundaries remains important throughout China.

The common Chinese word for crime is 犯罪, or fànzuì, while fraud is often called 诈骗, or zhàpiàn. Public security police investigate many everyday crime reports, and the police emergency number is 110. Opportunistic theft can occur in crowded transport, markets, nightlife areas, tourist sites, and other busy places. Keep phones, wallets, passports, and bags controlled, and do not leave valuables unattended. Fraud may begin through a phone call, message, social platform, payment request, fake service, investment promise, romance approach, or person claiming official authority. Urgency, secrecy, guaranteed profit, and requests to move money are strong warning signs. Digital payments are common in China, which can be convenient but can also make a rushed mistake immediate. Check the recipient, amount, and purpose before approving any payment, and never reveal passwords or verification codes. Visitors and newcomers may encounter inflated prices, misleading offers, unofficial transport, or pressure to enter a business and pay an unexpected bill. Confirm prices before accepting goods or services, and leave if the situation becomes controlling or unclear. Harassment, threats, assault, domestic abuse, and sexual violence are serious even when no property is taken. Move to safety, contact police or a trusted person, preserve relevant evidence, and seek medical care when needed. Reporting usually begins with the local police or a police station, known as a 公安局 or 派出所 depending on the level and office. Bring identification and retain messages, payment records, photographs, serial numbers, locations, and a clear timeline when it is safe to do so. Police and monitored public spaces can support prevention and investigation, but recovery of money or property is never guaranteed. Language barriers, delayed reporting, weak documentation, cross-border transactions, and fear of embarrassment can make a case harder to resolve.
