Politics in China

Politics in China is organized under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, usually shortened to CPC. State institutions, local governments, consultative bodies, and public organizations all operate within this party-led system. Understanding the difference between party leadership and state administration makes Chinese politics easier to follow.

State

The state in China is the public system that makes laws, administers services, manages territory, and exercises official authority. The People’s Republic of China is a unitary state with national leadership and several levels of local administration. Its state institutions operate within the wider leadership of the Communist Party of China.

Elections

Elections in China mainly select members of people’s congresses and certain local self-governance committees. Voters directly elect deputies at the county and township levels, while congresses at higher levels are formed through indirect elections. This system does not use competitive national multiparty elections to choose the country’s top leadership.
