Taxes in China

China’s tax system includes national and local administration of taxes connected to individuals and businesses. Personal obligations depend on what income or transactions a person has. Individual Income Tax, commonly shortened to IIT, covers categories of personal income. Employment income is often reported and withheld through the employer. Tax residence is not the same as nationality or immigration status. Time in China, home connections, and the source of income can affect whether domestic or overseas income is considered. Some taxpayers may qualify for deductions or special additional deductions linked to recognized household expenses. Eligibility and documentation matter, so a deduction should not be assumed from the expense alone. Self-employed people, business owners, landlords, and people with multiple income sources may have duties beyond normal payroll withholding. Personal and business records should be kept separate. A fapiao is an official invoice used in China’s tax and reimbursement system. It has a different role from an informal receipt or payment screenshot. Property sales, investment income, benefits, and cross-border payments can create additional tax questions. The legal form and real purpose of a transaction both matter. Good records support filing, corrections, deductions, and questions from an employer or tax authority. Contracts, payroll statements, official invoices, tax records, and proof of payment should be retained securely.
