Transport in China

China's railway system connects major cities and many smaller places. High-speed rail is especially important for intercity travel, while conventional trains serve additional routes and travel patterns. Large cities often have extensive metro networks. Station signs and announcements may include English, but exits can be far apart and lead to very different streets. Public buses reach areas beyond metro lines. Routes can be harder for newcomers because stops, direction information, and service changes may be mainly in Chinese. Taxis and app-based ride-hailing provide door-to-door travel. Passengers should check the vehicle and destination and use the recorded trip channel when available. Shared bicycles and electric two-wheelers are common for short journeys. Riders must pay close attention to local lanes, parking areas, helmets, pedestrians, and vehicles approaching quietly. Intercity travel commonly links identity details to the booking and boarding process. The traveler's name and document information must match the document carried. Major stations and airports are large and may involve security checks, long walks, and separate waiting areas. Arriving with extra orientation time reduces stress. Accessibility varies across vehicles, stations, streets, and older buildings. Travelers with mobility, sensory, or luggage needs should check the complete route rather than only the main vehicle.
