Crime in Croatia is handled through institutions including the police, public prosecutors, and courts. The police are commonly called Policija and form part of the Ministry of the Interior, known as Ministarstvo unutarnjih poslova or MUP. Police respond to urgent incidents, protect people, gather initial information, investigate suspected offences, and pass relevant cases into the justice process. A report does not itself decide guilt because evidence and legal decisions follow separate procedures. Theft can involve unattended bags, wallets, phones, bicycles, vehicles, accommodation, or belongings in crowded places. Simple control of valuables and secure storage reduce opportunity but cannot guarantee protection. Fraud can occur through false accommodation offers, payment requests, impersonation, misleading sales, romance approaches, investment claims, or messages designed to steal account access. Pressure, secrecy, unusual payment methods, and requests for passwords are warning signs. Violence, threats, stalking, harassment, and domestic abuse should be taken seriously. A person facing immediate danger should move to a safer place when possible and contact emergency services. Cybercrime includes account theft, malicious links, payment fraud, identity misuse, and unauthorized access. Strong unique passwords, additional login verification, software updates, and careful handling of messages provide useful basic protection. When reporting crime, the police may ask what happened, where and when it occurred, who was involved, what was lost or damaged, and what evidence exists. Interpretation or other communication support may be important for someone who does not speak Croatian. Useful evidence can include messages, transaction records, photographs, identifying details, witness information, and serial numbers. Evidence should be preserved without confronting a suspected offender or placing anyone in danger. Reporting can support personal protection, investigation, insurance, replacement of documents, and recognition of repeated offending. Recovery is not always possible, and the time or outcome of a case cannot be guaranteed.
