Labor law in Croatia

Croatian labor law, called radno pravo, distinguishes employment from independent business activity. The real way work is organized can matter, not only the label placed on an agreement. An employment relationship is normally based on an ugovor o radu, or employment contract. The document should make essential points clear, including the parties, work, place of work, pay, working arrangements, and duration where relevant. Employment may be open-ended or fixed-term. Fixed-term work is an exception intended for a limited situation rather than a way to remove ordinary employee protection without reason. Employees have rights concerning pay, rest, leave, equal treatment, dignity, and safe working conditions. Employers must organize work lawfully, keep required records, and protect health and safety. Collective agreements, internal rules, and an individual contract can influence working conditions. They operate alongside mandatory legal protections and cannot simply erase rights that the law makes compulsory. Employment can end by agreement, expiry of a valid fixed term, resignation, dismissal, or another lawful ground. The reason, procedure, written documents, and surrounding facts can all be important. Workplace disputes often begin with missing pay, unclear duties, unequal treatment, harassment, unsafe work, or dismissal. Useful evidence includes the contract, payslips, schedules, attendance records, instructions, and messages. Workers may seek help from the employer, a trade union, the competent inspectorate, or a court, depending on the problem. Some remedies must be pursued promptly, so unexplained delay can weaken a claim.
